Draft - Medinfo clinical workshop submission 2010

Instructions from MEDINFO2010 site:

"Submissions for pre-congress tutorials and workshops should list a set of learning objectives and expected outcomes, as well as a description of the material to be covered including the interactive strategies which will be used during the tutorial/workshop to engage the audience. Submissions will be evaluated on the anticipated educational and participant benefits, presenters' qualifications/credentials and on audience engagement strategies proposed."

Clinical Content Collaboration

It is essential that clinicians are able to contribute to the development of clinical content for electronic health records. Clinicians are able to participate meaningfully when the technical focus on the process and the clinical models are reduced or removed. In the openEHR approach - from the original design specification through to the clinical modelling tools - clinicians feature as the primary drivers of clinical content models. As tooling develops and matures to support authoring, reviewing and publishing of openEHR knowledge artefacts, clinicians are increasingly able to be involved - resulting in significant contributions to the development of standardized clinical content models which will support quality of care for their patients.

The learning objectives of this full day workshop is to:

  • Explore healthcare reform and the role of openEHR in facilitating that change. Explore the role of archetypes in future proof health information systems.
  • Explore how clinical process improvement efforts are translated into requirements for archetypes and templates
  • Explore how archetype-based EHRs can close the loop between clinical practice, research and education. Demonstrate clinical guideline representation using archetypes/templates and guideline compliance checking.
  • Explore how archetypes/templates can be used to preserve legacy EHR content definitions and to improve interoperability of legacy EHR applications.
  • Educate clinicians about openEHR archetypes and templates as the building blocks for sharing health information at a knowledge level (semantic interoperability).
  • Demonstrate tools which they can use to build openEHR archetypes and templates.
  • Create an archetype, including the latest methodology regarding collecting the clinical content, organising the content, and best practice archetype design.
  • Create a template representing a real world clinical situation that needs to be captured in an electronic health record.
  • Demonstrate the openEHR Clinical Knowledge Manager as
    • An online archetype/template library/resource,
    • An international collaborative space for clinicians to review, agree and publish archetypes, and
    • A framework for archetype governance.
  • Show archetypes in practice: demonstrator and real world EHR applications.

Format:

  • The initial part of the workshop will be providing background information and be presented as an interactive presentation, including tooling demonstrations.
  • Creation of the openEHR archetype will involve active participation by the workshop attendees, guided by openEHR modelling experts, as will creation of the template suitable for a real clinical scenario.
  • If attending with a laptop, attendees will be able supported to install the tools and can build these models on their own computer in parallel with the group activity.

Expected outcomes:

  • An understanding of openEHR archetypes and templates, including how these are being used to facilitate sharing health information and knowledge.
  • Access to openEHR modelling tools - open source Archetype Editors, Ocean Template Designer trial.
  • Attendee Clinicians and informaticians will have an understanding of the international collaborative work in the Clinical Knowledge Manager occurring to agree archetypes, and be equipped to actively participate.
  • Ability to be able to create draft archetypes and templates for submission to the CKM library and sharing
