Rong received a Bachelor of Medicine degree from Shanghai Medical University in 1997 and practiced two years in General Thoracic Surgery before he came to Sweden to purse a career in Medical Informatics. He played many roles in different health IT projects in Stockholm area over the years. He is currently working for Cambio Healthcare Systems and plays a role of CMIO in leading R&D activities and defining next generation products.

In 2004 he led the development of a Java implementation of openEHR, which later became open source and adopted as the openEHR Reference Java Implementation. He is the author of the openEHR Java Implementation Technology Specification and has contributed to several design specifications based on his extensive implementation experience. He is in his final year of a PhD program (EHR semantic interoperability) at the Linköping University and published several papers on EHR and archetypes.
